A Story of Beauty and Adventure told by Gimba Liz the Tourist

As the sun cast its golden rays upon the Ugandan landscape, I embarked on a journey from Jinja to the captivating city of Fort Portal, eager to unravel its natural wonders and immerse myself in its rich cultural tapestry. I took the journey among other travellers from FELLOW TRAVELERS UG. The excitement coursing through my veins was akin to a symphony, each beat promising an adventure that would forever be etched in my memory. For long I had dreamed life in this tourism capital in the Pearl of Africa, indeed this journey was a dream come true.

By the end of the journey, I believed that the true definition of Fort Portal as a city entirely lies in Tourism. By nature, location, environment and people, Fort Portal is unrivaled as being the heart of Uganda’s tourism sites and activities due to its natural instatement.

My first stop was the quaint town of Mubende, where I savored a delightful lunch, the flavors dancing on my taste buds and fueling my anticipation for the adventures that lay ahead. With renewed vigor, I continued my journey to Fort Portal, the gateway to a realm of pristine beauty and hidden gems.

Along the way I witnessed several vended slopes, beautiful natural forests, astonishing holy baboons in the forest of Kibale national park and extensive miles of tea plantations ushered us to Fort Portal City. In my heart I was already wondering whether the world knows about this beauty.

From Fort Portal main city through sharp escarpments of Rwenzori, I was immediately drawn to the allure of the Male and Female Hot Springs of Ssempaya, nestled in the verdant Semuliki National Park. The steaming geothermal pools beckoned me with their promise of relaxation and rejuvenation. I immersed myself in the warm embrace of the mineral-rich waters, letting the cares of the world melt away as I soaked in the tranquility of the surroundings.

The next day dawned with a sense of exhilaration as I embarked on a quest to explore the Amabere Caves, where stalactites and stalagmites dripped in an otherworldly dance of time. The cool, damp air enveloped me as I delved into the caverns, my imagination ignited by the eerie silence and labyrinthine passages. Each turn revealed a new natural masterpiece, sculpted by the relentless hand of time. The place was named Amabeere-ga-Nynamwiru (literally meaning the breasts of Nyinamwiru) and Nyinamwiru was a daughter to the first King of Bacwezi (King Bukuku) and was the mother of King Ndahura the child who was fed on these rock breasts as who grow to succeed his grandfather’s kingdom.

No sojourn to Fort Portal would be complete without witnessing the cascading waters of the Mahoma Falls located amidst several crater lakes, where nature’s artistry is on full display. First was an encounter with One of the most famous crater lakes in Uganda the Nyinambuga Crater lake whose photo is engraved on the twenty thousand Uganda Shilling note. Soon the roar of the waterfall filled the air, creating a symphony of grandeur that echoed through the valleys. I stood mesmerized, my soul resonating with the sheer power and beauty of the scene.

With a heart full of cherished memories, I bid farewell to Fort Portal, its allure forever etched into my mind. The enchanting city had unveiled its natural treasures, leaving me with a profound appreciation for Uganda’s breathtaking beauty and the wonders that awaited in every corner. As I departed, I carried with me the echoes of laughter, the symphony of nature, and the indelible mark of an unforgettable adventure.
