November 2024 will forever be etched in my memory as the day I embarked on an exhilarating adventure to the majestic Rwenzori Mountains. Alongside three friends, Meshach, Eunice, and Hannah, we set out on a one-day hike along the Bwamba Pass trail in Karangura sub-county.

The morning sun cast a golden glow over the landscape as we began our ascent. The initial hours were a breeze, with our energy levels high and spirits soaring. However, as we climbed higher, the skies darkened, and the rain clouds gathered. Before we knew it, we were caught in a downpour, making every step a challenge. The steep slopes became slippery, and we found ourselves tumbling down, our clothes soaked and our bodies weary.

Despite the obstacles, we pressed on, driven by our determination to reach the top. The scenery around us was breathtaking – lush vegetation, sparkling water streams, and the majestic lower peaks of the majestic Rwenzori range. We marveled at the beauty of nature, our spirits lifted by the sheer wonder of it all.

As we trekked through the mountainous terrain, we encountered the warm and welcoming Bakonzo community, whose smiles and greetings made us feel at home. We walked through vibrant coffee farms, the aroma of ripe coffee beans filling the air. The sound of hymns and prayers drifted from the churches we passed, a testament to the strong faith of the local community.

One of the most striking aspects of our hike was the diverse range of vegetation we encountered. From the grassland to the tropical rainforest and the alpine meadows, each zone offered a unique glimpse into the region’s rich biodiversity.

As we reached the highest point of our hike, we were rewarded with a stunning panorama of the Tooro region including home Fort Portal. The sense of accomplishment and camaraderie was palpable as we shared snacks, stories, and laughter.
Meshach, our resident botanist, regaled us with tales of the region’s unique plant species, medicinal plants, and trees of cultural significance. His knowledge added a new layer of depth to our experience, highlighting the intricate connections between the natural world and human culture.

At the top, we remembered our colleagues from Fort Portal City Walkers, with whom we normally hike, who keep our hiking motivation. We also thought of other hiking clubs in the country that have always been our motivation. This adventure motivated us to travel more, and we returned eager to explore more of Uganda’s hidden gems in 2025. Our targets are set on the regions of Rwenzori, Kigezi, Ankole, Sebei, and Teso.

As we made our way back down the mountain, exhausted but exhilarated, we knew that this was just the beginning of our Rwenzori adventure. We vowed to return, to conquer the Karangura High Peak and eventually, the mighty Margherita Peak.

The memories of our hike will stay with us forever – a testament to the power of nature, friendship, and determination.
