The Planned Tourist Celebrates a Unique Birthday on a hike to a Unique Nature Destination in the Rwenzori Mountains.
January 11, 2025, was a day I’ll never forget. Instead of celebrating my birthday in the usual way, I decided to take the road less traveled – literally. I embarked on a thrilling hike to the breathtaking Mitooma Waterfalls in the Karangura foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains.

My first time to hike far when am alone
Taking a solo adventure was both thrilling and intimidating at the same time. But, it felt completely normal to feel hesitant or worried st some points, especially when stepping out of my comfort zone. The fact that I pushed through those feelings and took the adventure anyway was truly satisfying!
It took me a lot of courage to face uncertainty and unknowns alone. By doing so, i abley discovered my new strengths and resilience within myself. I also proved that I am capable of navigating challenges and overcoming fears on my own while on such an adventure.
Truly, this solo adventure has proven to me to be incredibly empowering and transformative. It allowed me to tune into my own thoughts, feelings, and desires, and has given me the begining to grow as an individual traveller. This was a goal achieved for my birthday.

The journey began with a sense of curiosity and adventure. After inquiring from the locals, I discovered the existence of the majestic Mitooma Waterfalls. My desire to witness their beauty became unbearable, and I set out to find them. With the help of some enthusiastic village boys, who generously offered to guide me, we ventured into the rugged terrain.
The 3-hour hike was nothing short of challenging, but the scenic views and the promise of the waterfalls kept me going. As we climbed through rocky, steep areas, the roar of the waterfalls grew louder, and my excitement reached new heights.

As we went closer to the waterfalls, the scenery became increasingly breathtaking. Finally, we arrived at the waterfalls, and I was struck by their sheer beauty. The ice-cold water from the Rwenzori Mountains was invigorating, and the melodies of the wild birds created a symphony that was both calming and exhilarating that left me in awe.
Seating by the riverside, surrounded by nature’s splendor, was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday. The experience was exhilarating, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to connect with nature.

After an hour of soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the waterfalls, I bid farewell to my guides and continued my journey up the mountain. The views of Fort Portal City, Lake Saaka, Kicwamba Technical School and numerous villages sprawled out before me like a canvas of endless beauty.

As I climbed higher, the cool wind blowing across my face was refreshing, and the encounters with the native Bakonzo people were heartwarming. Their hospitality and warm greetings of “Wabuchiire” and “Wasingyayo” left a lasting impression on me and I felt grateful for the experience.

The mountain was alive with spiritual melodies from the Seventh Day Adventist churches, adding to the serene atmosphere. I also came across Kibyo primary school in Kibya village up the mountain, which serves the children of the mountain residents, highlighting the community’s efforts to provide education despite the challenges.
The village was thriving, with an abundance of food crops, including cassava, bananas, cowpeas, beans, yams, and potatoes. The children looked healthy and happy, playing and laughing together. The community’s hard work and resilience were evident in their coffee gardens, livestock, and innovative water collection systems.

The hike, which lasted 8 hours, was an experience I’ll always treasure. It was a testament to the beauty and wonder of the Rwenzori Mountains and the resilience of the people who call it home.

I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of friends who sent birthday messages while i was up in the mountsins, especially members of the various hiking clubs, workmates, relatives, and friends. Your kind words and wishes meant the world to me, your thoughtfulness is appreciated.

To the institutions and corporate companies that sent early morning birthday messages, I appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
Here’s to another year of adventure, exploration, and connection with nature and the people around me!
This birthday celebration was one for the books, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to experience the beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains. If you’re an adventure-seeker or simply looking for a unique experience, I highly recommend adding Mitooma Waterfalls to your bucket list.Until next time, stay adventurous!
