Imagine stepping into a place where emerald green meets azure blue, where ancient traditions whisper through the air, and every interaction leaves you feeling more connected to the world. This isn’t just a destination; it’s an invitation to experience the very soul of Uganda. This is Fort Portal, Uganda’s vibrant “Tourism City,” and our recent journey with Equera and Kitara Foundation for Regional Tourism has shown us its incredible potential for Community-Based Tourism (CBT). We saw it, we touched it, we felt it—and now it’s time to share its story.
Fort Portal; Where Nature and Culture Embrace
Fort Portal and its surrounding areas are a tapestry woven with natural wonders and rich cultural heritage, offering an authentic and immersive CBT experience. Here, you don’t just observe; you participate, learn, and contribute directly to the well-being of the communities you visit.
Fort Portal’s strategic location is a true miracle for CBT. It’s nestled remarkably close to some of Uganda’s most iconic national parks: Kibale National Park, renowned for its chimpanzee trekking; Semuliki National Park, with its unique hot springs and diverse birdlife; and the sprawling Queen Elizabeth National Park, home to the tree-climbing lions. Moreover, the majestic Rwenzori Mountains, the “Mountains of the Moon,” loom gloriously in the distance, offering breathtaking vistas and trekking opportunities. This proximity means that after an exhilarating wildlife safari or a challenging mountain hike, you can seamlessly transition into a deeply enriching cultural encounter, making your trip truly holistic and impactful.
A Taste of Local Life: Discovering Kasenda with Kasenda Community Tourism Center
Our immersion began with a remarkable young entrepreneur, Mr. Crescent of Engeya Tours and Kasenda Community Tourism Center. Crescent, a passionate advocate for his community, guided us through a captivating tour of the region’s stunning crater lakes, including the picturesque Lake Nyinambuga, Lake Ryantonde, Lake Kifurukwa, and Lake Mwamba. Each offered a unique serene beauty, perfect for reflection and photography.

One of the highlights was the vanilla farming and processing experience. We learned about the intricate process of cultivating and curing vanilla, from pollination to the aromatic pods you find in stores. What truly surprised us was the innovative vanilla gin and whisky – a testament to the community’s ingenuity! Our relaxation at the Lake Mwamba Lodge was truly a class apart, offering comfort and tranquility amidst nature, with stunning views of the lake.
Crescent also led us to the Mahoma Waterfalls for a unique hydrotherapy massage, where the cascading waters provided a natural, invigorating spa experience. Nearby, we explored the fascinating historical caves, which whispered tales of ancient times and local legends, connecting us to the rich past of the region.
The Kasenda community as a whole exemplifies the spirit of CBT. It’s not just about the individual sites; it’s about the collective effort of the community to share their way of life. From agricultural practices to local craftsmanship, Kasenda offers a genuine glimpse into the daily rhythms and vibrant spirit of rural Uganda, empowering its residents directly through tourism.
Tooro Kingdom; Championing Sustainable Tourism
We were honored to meet Owek Duncan, the Deputy Minister for Tourism in the Tooro Kingdom. He eloquently shared the Kingdom’s visionary initiatives to promote both cultural and nature tourism. As a revered cultural institution, the Kingdom places strong emphasis on sustainable and responsible travel, ensuring that tourism benefits the communities while preserving their invaluable heritage for future generations. This commitment from a cultural leadership truly solidifies Fort Portal’s standing as a responsible tourism destination.
