His Holiness Mulema e’Mulema, the Chief Priest of the Buchwezi, is spearheading a movement to restore African spirituality. He is currently leading thousands of followers from Uganda, East Africa, and other African nations in establishing a network of spiritual bases called “Ebigabiro” across the continent. This initiative, which began in 2019, aims to revive the Buchwezi legacy and reconnect Africans with their spiritual roots.

Reclaiming a Lost History
For generations, the history of the Bachwezi dynasty has been shrouded in mystery. Historical accounts suggest that around 2,000 years ago, the dynasty, which reigned at Bigo bya Mugyenyi between 1000-1500 AD, vanished, either in Lake Tanganyika or the Wamala River, following an invasion by the Luo people at a time when they were also battling disease and famine. However, Mulema e’Mulema rejects this narrative, asserting that the Bachwezi never truly disappeared. He believes it is the responsibility of the current generation to understand this truth and lay the spiritual groundwork for future generations to avoid what he calls “spiritual injustices.”

Expanding the Network of Spiritual Bases
Since 2019, Mulema has been actively setting up and opening these spiritual centers. “Ebigabiro” have been established in various districts across western Uganda, including Kamwenge, Kazo, Kiruhura, Isingiro, Kyegegwa, Mbarara, Buhweju, Sheema, and Kitagwenda. The movement has also extended its reach beyond Uganda, creating strong networks with thousands of followers in Rwanda and other parts of Africa. Mulema stresses the importance of this work, stating, “It is our role as Africans to restore and protect our culture, tradition, and spiritual beliefs.”

Symbolic Acts of Unity and Restoration
In a significant move to unite African cultures and beliefs, Mulema led a gathering from December 30, 2022, to January 1, 2023, where he handed over a ceremonial drum to the “Abahinda from Buganda.” According to Mulema, this act was a symbolic step toward restoring the Bachwezi dynasty and linking the Buganda and Ankole kingdoms, as Ankole is considered the historical base of the Bachwezi. These spiritual centers also serve as places of prayer and healing, where people with various spiritual issues seek spiritual guidance. Each base is overseen by a local leader.

A Universal Message of Salvation
Bashir Mulema e’Mulema, who also goes by “The Buchwezi of Rurema Universe,” describes his message as the “Return of God in Africa and Beyond.” He states that the purpose of his work is to liberate the souls of people who have felt spiritually lost. His message, he explains, transcends language and reaches not only the living but also the souls of the deceased and those yet to be born. It also extends to all of creation, including animals and plants. According to Mulema, the return to the Buchwezi and Rurema is a union of souls—the living, the deceased, and the unborn. He urges people to look beyond conventional understandings of culture and religion and to recognize the deeper spiritual truth of his message, which is rooted in honesty and compassion for all.
