The dust of the open road knows the Ibanda that everyone drives through. But the ancient gods, the ones who whispered secrets to the legendary Bachwezi, guard a different Ibanda—a land of emerald mystery and breathtaking peaks. You think you know adventure?

Prepare to step through a veil. On the 10th of October, as the equatorial sun gilded the Western Ugandan plains, a fellowship of modern-day explorers, members of various revered hiking clubs, gathered not just for a hike, but for an audacious, three-day quest into the heart of a concealed, true African wonder. This was not a mere vacation; this was an unfolding destiny, an escape from the mundane, fuelled by the pulse of the wild and the promise of a love story with the land itself.

Beyond the City Limits: Unveiling the True Ibanda

The Ibanda known by the passing motorist is a deceptive façade. The true Ibanda lies beyond the tarmac, a sprawling panorama of rolling, green hills, sun-drenched valleys, and ancient rock formations that whisper the names of kings long forgotten. It is here, off the beaten track, that we discovered a hidden realm of Uganda—a tapestry of agricultural life, profound history, and geological splendour that demands to be seen, trekked, and reverently explored. It is a siren call for the intrepid, an open invitation to witness the raw, untamed beauty that forms the soul of the Pearl of Africa.

Wild Hiking: The African Quest
The true quest began with a powerful symbolic act—a pledge to the land.

The Fellowship of the Trail

Drawn from the vibrant heart of Western Uganda and the energy of Kampala, this diverse band of adventurers formed a powerful, unified cohort:

  1. Mbarara City Hikers: Known for their robust pace and relentless determination, they bring the rugged resilience of the Ankole heartland to every ascent.
  2. Ibanda Trekkers Club: The local custodians of the trail, they possess the intimate knowledge of the hills, their members embodying the spirit of Ibanda’s hospitality and hidden pathways.
  3. Fort Portal Mountaineering Hikers: Hailing from the shadow of the Rwenzoris, they bring a technical expertise and a deep reverence for high-altitude challenges, their presence a promise of conquering the peaks.
  4. Kasese Hikers Club: Infused with the mountain DNA of the western borderlands, they are renowned for their strength, endurance, and cheerful spirit, conquering distance with ease.
  5. Uganda Hiking Club (UHC): The national vanguard of the hiking movement, UHC members bring professionalism, extensive experience, and a unifying spirit, setting the standard for adventure travel across Uganda.
Conservation: A Pact with Mother Nature
The adventure began not with a scramble up a rock face, but with a humble shovel. This was a nature-friendly tour, a sacred commitment to preservation. Tree planting was conducted at the Ibanda District Headquarters and Ibanda Catholic Church, a dual dedication to civil and spiritual guardianship.

The Magic of the Night: Camping and Campfire

  • Camping: To sleep in a tent, with only canvas separating you from the colossal African night sky, was a primal, humbling experience. The cool night air, the soft rustle of the wind, and the brilliant spray of the Milky Way overhead turned a simple sleep into a meditation on the universe.

The Gault Monument (Amabare ga Gault): A Historical Mystery

We trekked to the historical Gault Monument in Kibubura, known locally as Amabare ga Gault (Gault’s Stones). This imposing geological marker stands in silent memory of Sir Harry Gault, a British colonial administrator whose story is entwined with the region’s past. Surrounded by this mystery, the monument is a powerful reminder of the intersection between colonial history and the enduring African landscape, prompting reflection on the layered history beneath our feet.

Nyakahondogoro Caves: Soul Building and the Bachwezi Legend

The Climax Build-Up: An Ascent into the Mystical

This was the ascent into the fantasy realm. Located high up the majestic Mabanga Hills, the Nyakahondogoro Caves are steeped in the profound legend of the Bacwezi, the revered ancestral gods of the African Great Lakes region. Reaching them was not merely a physical challenge, but a soul-building pilgrimage, a search for the spirits of the ancient kingdom.

The trail was a theatre for human connection:

  • Team Building and Relationship: The sheer difficulty of the climb dissolved barriers, forcing a dependency that built immediate, lasting bonds.
  • Support of One Another: Hands were offered, spirits were lifted, and strangers became trail-side siblings, embodying the true essence of Ubuntu.
  • Scenic Views: As we ascended, the stunning, sweeping vistas of Ibanda’s lower flat plains unfolded, rewarding our effort with an unrivalled, breathtaking panorama.

Hanging Bridge Experience: A Breathtaking Leap of Faith

Testing our nerve and trust, the crossing of a hanging bridge suspended across a deep, shadowed valley was a true thriller moment. The slight sway, the dizzying view down, and the awareness of the gorge beneath made every step a thrilling act of faith, reminding us of the fragility and beauty of being fully present.

Hike to Bihingi Waterfalls: The Romantic Release; The Climax Baptism of Nature

Nestled in a lush, hidden gorge within the Ibanda hills, the trek to the Bihingi Twin Falls was a perfect, romantic nature walk. The journey took us through an idyllic Ugandan landscape: winding paths through working cattle farms, vast millet gardens, and fragrant banana plantations, before the final, steep, exhilarating scramble down slick rocks to the river valley.

The Difficult Moment: The Goodbye Time

The adventure drew to its poignant close at Colonel Barigye’s home, where the fellowship shared one last, hearty meal. To bid farewell after three days of shared peril, laughter, and soul-deep connection was the single most difficult moment. It was a tangible wrench—a group that had been unified by the trail now had to splinter back into individual lives, leaving behind a piece of their heart on the Ibanda hills. The silence of the departures spoke volumes of the bonds forged.

The Foundation of the Quest: Kitara’s Vision

Our presence in this weekend adventure was lined in our very mission for Kitara Foundation for Sustainable Tourism, to unearth and protect these treasures. This is our calling and its what we pledged to do;

  • Promoting Community Tourism: The Foundation acts as a guiding spirit, ensuring that the wealth generated by the footsteps of adventure seekers flows directly into the hands of the local custodians. By integrating local communities—their culture, their stories, and their products—into the tourism value chain, Kitara ensures that Ibanda’s natural and historical sites are conserved, and its people are empowered. It’s a reciprocal bond: travelers gain authentic, unforgettable experiences, and communities gain sustainable livelihoods.
  • Promoting Domestic Tourism Development: Kitara Foundation champions the idea that the greatest adventures often lie in one’s own backyard. We actively encourage Ugandans to discover the rich, untold narratives within their own borders. By promoting events like the Ibanda camping and hiking, we build a sense of national pride, appreciation for domestic diversity, and a vibrant, resilient local tourism economy, proving that you don’t need a distant shore for an epic saga.
