The Silent Ascent: Finding Stillness on the Slopes of Mount Muhabura
On November 22, 2025, the Uganda Hiking Club stood at the base of Mount Muhabura. Known as “The Guide” in the local Rufumbira language, the volcanic cone loomed over the Kisoro landscape, its peak piercing the morning mist.

While reaching the summit at 4,127 meters was a physical triumph, the true story of the hike lay in the internal journey of our members—a transition from the “noise” of daily life to a profound, shared stillness.
The Rhythm of the Day: From Anticipation to Achievement
The expedition was a test of endurance and mental grit. Here is how the journey unfolded:
- 06:30 AM | The Spark: Departure from Kisoro Town. The air was thick with the “loud” energy of anticipation and nervous laughter.
- 08:00 AM | The Start: The hike commenced. These early hours were filled with chatter, the clicking of cameras, and constant questions about the steepness ahead.
- 06:00 PM | The Finish: After ten grueling hours of vertical gain and descent, the final hiker stepped off the trail.
- 07:00 PM | The Stillness: A quiet return to the hotel. Physical exhaustion had begun to give way to a deeper mental calm.
From Noise to Stillness
Every hiker eventually reaches a “silent phase.” On the steep ridges of the Virungas, our members found it.
At the start, the trail was loud. We narrated every step and measured our progress against the summit. But as the altitude increased and the air thinned, something shifted. We stopped needing to “prove” we were there. Somewhere between the second rest point and the crater lake at the summit, the need for distraction died down.
We stopped checking phones. We stopped narrating the struggle. We simply walked—not because we were too tired to speak, but because silence finally felt right. > “You realize you’re not trying to escape life anymore. You’re learning how to carry it better.”
The Personal Mountain
For the Uganda Hiking Club, Muhabura was a demanding teacher. It taught us that the “Silent Phase” is where hiking becomes personal. In the thin air, we discovered:
- Breath as Rhythm: How the body finds its own pace when the mind stops racing.
- Perspective: How heavy problems from Kampala suddenly find their rightful, smaller place when viewed from a volcanic ridge.
- Shared Silence: The realization that being quiet together is a powerful form of camaraderie.
As we watched the clouds roll over the Virunga range, we were no longer just a group of people climbing a hill; we were a community of calm hikers.
