Ancient Ankole: The Ultimate 7-Day Odyssey from Kraals to the Savana of Uganda

Experience the heart of the Ankole Kingdom with Rwetango Tourism Centre. This seven-day journey is designed under our Community-Based Tourism Initiative, ensuring that your visit directly empowers the families of Nyakahita.

Why Lake Mburo is a Prime Destination

Lake Mburo National Park is unique because it is a “Living Landscape.” Unlike other parks, there are no elephants, allowing the acacia woodlands to create a serene, intimate environment. It is the only place in southern Uganda to see Impalas, Giraffe and the best place for Zebras.

Most importantly, it is the prime destination for Cultural Tourism because the wildlife and the local Banyankole people live in a rare, ancient harmony. At Rwetango, we bridge these two worlds, showing you that conservation and culture are one and the same.

We proudly operate under the 70/20 Pearl Accord:

  • 70% of your tour expenditure remains directly in the Nyakahita community to pay for local guides, organic food sourcing, and host family stipends.
  • 20% is funneled into a Deliberate Community Fund for local projects like clean water and education, leaving a lasting legacy long after you depart.

At Rwetango Tourism Centre, we recognize that every traveler’s journey is personal. This itinerary serves as a foundational map, but it is entirely flexible and customizable to align with your specific pace, physical abilities, and curiosities.

Whether you wish to extend your stay in the herdsman’s kraal to master the art of traditional ghee-making, swap a strenuous hike for a quiet afternoon of storytelling by the lake, or focus more deeply on the agricultural techniques of our coffee farmers, we can adjust the schedule to suit you.

Our goal is to ensure your immersion is as comfortable as it is authentic, allowing you to prioritize the cultural or natural elements that resonate most with your spirit.

Day 1: Arrival & The Herdsman’s Welcome Arrive at Rwetango Tourism Centre in Nyakahita, overlooking the whispering plains of Lake Mburo. Settle into a traditional homestay with a Bahima family. As evening falls, sit by the kyooto (fireplace) to hear the “Story of the Long-Horns”—how the Ankole cows are considered family, each with a name and a lineage as prestigious as royalty.

Day 2: The Life of the Cow (Full Immersion) Wake up before dawn to the sound of bells. Participate in the morning milking, learn the art of Okukama, and help the herdsmen treat the majestic long-horned cattle. Spend the afternoon learning to make Amasita (traditional ghee) and understanding the “language of the whistle” used to guide the herd.

Day 3: The Throne of the Omugabe Journey to the heart of the Ankole Kingdom. Visit the royal sites and the Igongo Cultural Museum. Here, our guides will share the history of the Omugabe (King) and the traditional tales of the legendary warrior Queen Kitami. Learn about the social tapestry of the Bahima (pastoralists) and Bairu (agriculturalists) that defines this region.

Day 4: Nsongezi – Where Life Began Travel to the Nsongezi Rock Shelters in Isingiro. Overlooking the Kagera River, this Stone Age site holds the secrets of the “Wilton” industry. Listen to the local elders tell the story of how the first inhabitants crafted tools from stone and how the very first sparks of human ingenuity in the region were struck right here.

Day 5: Ibanda Hiking & The Bacwezi Mystery Head to Ibanda for a physical challenge and a spiritual treat. Hike the Mabanga Hills to reach the Nyakahondogoro Caves. These caves are steeped in the legend of the Bacwezi—the demi-gods who disappeared but are said to still guard the land. Conclude your hike with a refreshing visit to the twin waterfalls, offering panoramic views of the rolling Ankole hills.

Day 6: Isingiro’s Bounty & The Mbarara Market Spend your morning in Isingiro participating in the Banana and Coffee experiences. Learn how to harvest Matooke and the traditional process of roasting coffee beans. In the afternoon, visit the bustling Mbarara City food market. Witness the “Economy of the Mother”—seeing firsthand how women traders turn farm produce into the livelihoods that educate and sustain the next generation.

Day 7: The Wild Finale at Lake Mburo End your immersion with a weekend safari. Enjoy a morning game drive to spot the impalas, giraffe and zebras that roam freely between the park and community lands. In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on Lake Mburo, watching hippos and the rare African Finfoot, reflecting on a week of deep cultural connection.
