Experience the mist-covered peaks and vibrant traditions of the Kigezi Region, famously known as the “Switzerland of Africa.” This title is no exaggeration; with its terraced emerald hills, deep valleys, and cool, temperate climate, Kigezi offers a rugged alpine beauty unique to the African continent.
Hosted by Paradise Eco Hub, this trail operates under the 70/20 Pearl Accord: 70% of your expenditure goes directly to the local guides, artisans, and families you visit, while 20% is dedicated to the Community Development Fund to support local education and healthcare.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a world-class travel experience because it offers a rare, intimate encounter with nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population within a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This activity serves as the economic backbone for the Kigezi region, particularly through the 70/20 Pearl Accord and government revenue-sharing programs that ensure a significant portion of permit fees and tour costs are reinvested into the surrounding villages.
By participating in this trek, visitors provide direct employment for local residents as guides, trackers, and porters—many of whom were formerly involved in forest exploitation—and contribute to the Community Development Fund that builds essential infrastructure like schools and health clinics.
This model transforms the “Gentle Giants” from a conservation challenge into a shared community asset, where the prosperity of the local Bakiga and Batwa people is directly linked to the survival of the forest and its inhabitants.
By choosing Paradise Eco Hub, you are not just a tourist; you are a partner in the 70/20 Pearl Accord. Your stay ensures that the beauty of Lake Bunyonyi remains preserved through community-led conservation, and that the Bakiga, Bafumbira, and Batwa people remain the primary beneficiaries of their own heritage.
At Paradise Eco Hub, we believe that the most meaningful journeys are those tailored to the spirit of the traveler. This Kigezi trail is designed to be fully customizable and flexible, allowing us to adapt the itinerary to your personal interests, physical pace, and time constraints.
Whether you wish to spend an extra day birdwatching on the quiet shores of Lake Bunyonyi, prefer a more leisurely village walk over a challenging mountain climb, or want to focus specifically on the rich culinary traditions of the Bakiga and Batwa people, we are happy to refine the details for you.
Our goal is to ensure your “Switzerland of Africa” experience is perfectly aligned with your preferences while maintaining the deep community connections that make this region so special.
Day 1: Arrival at the “Lake of Small Birds” Arrive in Kabale and take a traditional motorized dugout to Paradise Eco Hub on Itambira Island. Nestled in the center of Lake Bunyonyi, the second deepest lake in Africa, your eco-friendly cabin offers a front-row seat to the morning mist. Spend the evening around the campfire learning the geography of the 29 islands that dot the lake.
Day 2: The Tales of the 29 Islands Embark on a comprehensive Boat Cruise across Lake Bunyonyi. Visit Punishment Island (Akampene), where you’ll hear the somber history of how girls who conceived out of wedlock were once abandoned, and Upside-Down Island (Buvuma), known for the legend of the vengeful old woman. Your guide from Paradise Eco Hub will weave these ancient oral histories into the scenic voyage.
Day 3: Bakiga Hearth & Heritage Head to the mainland for a deep dive into the Bakiga Community. Known for their incredible physical strength and resilience, the Bakiga will welcome you with the Ekizino—a powerful traditional dance characterized by rhythmic stomping that literally shakes the earth. Engage in storytelling sessions about the ancient “Hill-top lifestyle” and learn how the famous Kigezi terraces were engineered by hand.
Day 4: The Bafumbira Highlands & Sagitwe Caldera Travel toward the volcanic landscapes of Kisoro to meet the Bafumbira people. Choose your challenge: a strenuous, soul-stirring hike to the peak of Mount Muhabura (4,127m) for views of Rwanda and Congo, or a cultural hike to the Sagitwe Caldera. Sagitwe offers a 360-degree view of the volcanic chain and is a sacred site for traditional Bafumbira blessings.
Day 5: The Forest Keepers & The Gentle Giants Enter the ancient Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Begin with a visit to the Batwa (Pygmy) Community, the original “Keepers of the Forest.” Hear their stories of life before the forest became a protected park. Then, embark on a Gorilla Trekking expedition. Meeting these great apes in their natural habitat is a profound experience that funds the protection of both the gorillas and the surrounding human communities.
Day 6: The Shadows of Kisizi Waterfalls Visit the breathtaking Kisizi Waterfalls. Beyond its scenic beauty and the mist that rises from the 30-meter drop, Kisizi holds a dark cultural history as a historical site of “redemption or punishment.” Today, it serves as a symbol of hope, powering a community hospital. Learn the “Story of the Leap” and how the community transformed a place of sorrow into a hub of healing and renewable energy.
Day 7: Kabale Spirit & Marketplace Livelihoods Return to Kabale town for a Sunday morning church service. Experience the powerful, harmonious singing that defines Kigezi’s spiritual life. Following the service, tour Kabale City to see the bustling trade centers. Witness how the Bakiga women trade their “Irish” (potatoes) and crafts, gaining insight into the modern economic pulse of the region before your departure.
