Reclaiming Our Spiritual Wholeness: Embracing God and Our African Identity

Think back to the days of our fathers, the 1960s in Africa. In those times, your community didn’t ask you to choose between your Christian or Islamic faith and your deeply rooted African identity. You could be a devout Christian or Muslim and still fully embrace who you were as an African, celebrating our traditions and heritage without contradiction.

But times have changed. Today, some expressions of Christianity and Islam have become more exclusive, viewing the honoring of indigenous African beliefs and practices as a betrayal of their faith. This creates a dilemma for many of us: how do we remain true to our chosen religion while also cherishing and living out our African heritage?

We believe it is possible. We believe we can hold both our religious integrity and our African worldview with pride and authenticity.

Come and see how! Here, led by a faithful Christian Prophet, we are living proof. Wherever he goes, within Uganda and beyond, he shares the powerful message of the Bible alongside the richness and wisdom of African traditions – in their fullness.

A Sanctuary of Harmony: Where Faith Meets Heritage

In our spiritual home, we have created a vibrant balance between modern Christianity and our cherished African indigenous traditions. This is a place where you are welcomed, a “Mubatabaazi” – one who seeks and finds spiritual nourishment. Our leaders, the “Abahereza” (those who serve), guide us, with the Prophet (“Nabi” in Luganda, “Omurangi” in Runyankole) as our chief spiritual guide.

Our sacred space is a unique sanctuary with three vital parts:

1. The Temple/Church (Eitambiro): The Heart of Christian Worship

Here, we gather as a congregation, our voices rising in Christian hymns and praises. We delve into the wisdom of the Bible through engaging studies and listen to the transformative message of the Gospel. This is a place of true worship, where both the Old and New Testaments guide our understanding of God.

2. The Shrine (Ebigabiro): Connecting with Our Ancestral Legacy

The Shrine has three significant entrances, “emiryango.” Traditionally, among the Banyankole, “emiryango” represents the major clans. Just as an “omuryango” is the entrance to a home, these three entrances are each named after a major clan, with its sub-clans listed. When you come to the Shrine, you enter through the “omuryango” of your clan.

Inside, there are no rigid instructions. Here, you connect directly with God, the Creator, through your ancestral spirits – your guiding angels – and the heavenly angels who serve as messengers between you and the Divine. You offer your confessions, seeking forgiveness and reconciliation. You pray for harmony with your ancestors, acknowledging their continued presence and influence in your life. And you bring your needs and desires directly to God. Many who have entered this sacred space during the quiet of the night have experienced profound encounters with angels and spirits.

3. The Counselling House (Nyaruju): Seeking Wisdom and Guidance

In the privacy of “Nyaruju,” the “Abatabaazi” meet individually with the Prophet – a practice we call “Okwehereera” in Runyankole, meaning to present oneself. Here, you can share your burdens, seek understanding for misfortunes, and receive insights into your future. The Prophet draws wisdom from the Bible and traditional African tools, offering varied counselling and guidance to believers.

He can discern spiritual conflicts in your life, identify any disharmony with your ancestors and guide you on how to restore those relationships. He can offer glimpses into your path ahead and illuminate what is expected of you – this is our African way of understanding the patterns of life.

A Journey of Wholeness: Bridging Faith and Heritage

Here, you will always find profound learning about strengthening your relationship with the Creator while deeply connecting with your traditional spiritual beliefs. Our leaders, the “Abahereza,” are dedicated to visiting the homes of believers, addressing the spiritual and cultural needs of your families.

We are taught how to navigate our religious identities – whether Christian or Muslim – by embracing the beautiful aspects of African culture that uplift our spirituality, promote a good life, and foster communal well-being. We encourage everyone to honor their heritage by dressing in traditional attire and participating in their traditional ceremonies with respect and pride.

Ultimately, we create a space where a multitude of religious viewpoints can coexist peacefully, without any single perspective dominating or compromising another. As an old African proverb wisely says: “The sky is large enough for birds to fly around without one having to bump into the other.”

This is a testament to the power of a Non-Denominational Church – a prayer palace that welcomes people from all walks of faith. No one is questioned about their religious affiliations. You are free to become a part of our community or to continue practicing your existing faith.
